ENGLISH-LANGUAGE PUBLICATIONS

There are two English-language newspapers published in Portugal: the Portugal News is weekly and has national coverage and distribution, also offering an online edition (www.theportugalnews.com). The Portugal Resident has a daily online publication (www.portugalresident.com) and three weekly regional editions focusing on the Algarve, greater Lisbon area and Madeira. Major international newspapers and magazines are widely available.

MANNERS: DOS AND DON’TS

There are a few principles that should be followed in order to avoid causing offense.

Do not stretch or sprawl in public places, and never put your feet on top of furniture.

Do not turn your back to someone you are in a group with; if this is unavoidable, excuse yourself beforehand.

At the table, the knife is always in the right hand and pushes the food on to the fork, which remains in the left. These are used simultaneously. The North American habit of cutting the food first and then eating using only the fork in the right hand is considered bad manners.

Once finished, place your knife and fork beside each other on the plate.

Maintain good posture; keep both hands above the table and your napkin on your lap, using it regularly.

It is acceptable to eat food such as shellfish with your fingers, but do not lick them!

If you are unsure whether a dish applies as finger food, follow your host’s example.

Though smoking used to be very common in Portugal, anti-smoking legislation passed in 2014 making it illegal to smoke in all bars, restaurants, and nightclubs, as well as regular increases in tobacco tax, led many people to quit, and smoking is now much less widespread than it used to be. When in someone’s home, it is best to ask permission before lighting up, or wait for someone else to light their cigarette first.
